Thrilled and honored to be kicking off the blogtour for this brilliant book in the fab Clem Fatale series by Eve Wersocki-Morris from Little Tiger!
Especially delighted to be sharing this guest post from the fab author herself!
Who is Clem Fatale?
Introducing Clem Fatale
Clem Fatale is the youngest gangster in 1950s London. She’s the daughter of Jimmy Fatale, the notorious jewel thief and leader of the Spider gang. Although Jimmy is a ducking and diving gangster, he’s also a bit of a Robin Hood figure; an honest crook only stealing from the rich and snooty ‘fat cats’ who run London Town.
Clem is twelve years old and when our story starts, she’s been helping out her dad’s gang for the last few months. Clem idolises her dad – who has been absent for most of her early life, fighting overseas during the Second World War – and she’d do anything to protect him. So when Jimmy Fatale disappears during the Spider’s heist of the Fool’s Canary (a unique yellow diamond in the shape of a bird), Clem will stop at nothing to find her dad and bring the traitors to justice.
Clem is determined, loyal and brave. She’s not afraid to bluff her way out of sticky situations – even if she’s scared stiff inside! One of Clem’s flaws is her inability to trust others and she never wants to look vulnerable. BUT throughout the adventure, Clem learns to make new friends and drop her tough act when she’s not facing down crooked gangsters.
The name ‘Clem Fatale’ came to me on an escalator in Piccadilly Circus underground station. I was thinking about the old 1940s and 1950s films I’d loved as a child – The Maltese Falcon, The 39 Steps and Double Indemnity (yes, I had a rather unusual film education when I was ten years old!) – and in those film noir thrillers there is an archetype called a ‘femme fatale’. The dangerous, mysterious, villainous woman. Then the name ‘Clem Fatale’ popped into my mind and I was amused at the thought of a character who was a sort of modern femme fatale with the name Clem Fatale.
The idea for the plot – and Clem herself as the jewel thieves’ daughter – proceeded to jump into my head and by the time I reached the bottom of the escalator, I had a pretty good idea for a first chapter. (In the end, Clem’s mother, Lynn Fatale, is more like the wicked and glamorous ‘femme fatale’ than street-wise Clem).
Clem Fatale is possibly my favourite hero I’ve ever created and I hope readers enjoy spending time with her!
