Shadow Creatures - Chris Vick

Publisher blurb:

Mose and her daughter Agna are incomers in the village, treated with suspicion. But young Liva, left out of the secrets her sister Tove and brother Hakken share, idolises Agna and follows her everywhere.

Unwittingly, they lead the German soldiers to a perfect island. Once a haven for picnics and story-telling under the midnight sun, it is transformed into a grim POW camp. This is an unlikely place to find buried treasure, but it's there.

Friendships are made and broken, family trust is turned upside down and lives change forever as Tove and Liva recall their childhood experiences of living through WW2 in a story that moves from light to darkness to light again.

An admission...I'm a complete suckered for a World War 2 story, and always have been. The fight against evil Nazis, brave resistance fighters, daring escape and secret missions....I love stories involving all these elements, and so I absolutely adored Chris Vick's latest, Shadow Creatures.

Set in Norway, the setting was slightly unfamiliar, and an aspect of the War I was previously unaware of. Based on his own family's experiences, this is an enlightening and at times shocking story about the occupation of Norway and the treatment of its citizens and prisoners at the time, as well as the bravery of those who stood against the occupiers in the face of dangerous repercussions.

Featuring brave heroines, evil Commandants, secret and forbidden journeys to islands in fjords, alongside friendships, treachery and the battle to do what's right, this is a serious story that had me absolutely gripped from start to finish.

Definitely for slightly older readers due to the content and themes, it's perfect for Y6 upwards, and fans of Phil Earle, Tom Palmer Liz Kessler etc will love it, I'm sure.

Brilliantly written, and more powerful for being based on real events, I highly recommend this.
